THE U.S. NAVY, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY AND MY FATHER

When it comes to the US Navy, I am on home territory.

Both my uncle and my late father, Joseph L. Leon, served in the US Navy.

My Dad was a Petty Officer Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class. He went to Great Lakes for basic training and as it turned out, one of his buddies during basic was Joseph Metcalf III, who rose to become Vice Admiral. After his tour of duty, my Dad ran the electron microscope laboratory at Columbia University under a grant of the Office of Naval Research. He was alway very proud of his service and it is his insight and advice that still resounds in my comic.

When he laughed, I knew I got it right.
